I've got a problem with the rear hub on my 1986 90 and I wonder if any one can help me?
The hub has been leaking oil so I have replaced both oil seals and guess what it still leaks! It seems to leak from around the hub cap. Does this actually serve any purpose? i.e. is it supposed to keep the oil in the axle?

Mike Hi,
the hub cap is plastic (shaped like a small bucket)? If you have already changed the stub axle's seals and those at the bearings side then most probably your stub axle was pitted and therefore must be leaking oil from there.

P.S. I do not know whether the stub axle seals are the same as the front ones but LR now sells a better design with two lips instead of one. You can also find them at good general seals and bearings stores. At least here in Greece it is easier to find them over there than and LR spare parts.

Check the diff vent tube, make sure it's not plugged or pinched. I ran into this on a heavy duty Chevy truck years ago, couldn't get the seals to stop leaking into the brakes, turned out the vent was plugged.
