KA24DE -> Oil in distributor

Hi folks,

I've read in this group about a common problem in this engine where the distributor shaft seals fail and let oil leak into the distributor, which clogs the holes in the cam position sensor. I've always checked my Altima's distributor for signs of this when I've had the cap off the distributor, and this time, I noticed some oil pooled in the plastic that covers the cam sensor. I can't be sure though if the oil is coming through the distributor shaft hole, or if it's from around the distributor itself... I am losing a bit of oil around the valve cover gasket.

Anyway, I was just wondering, when the dist. seals start leaking, is there anything that can be done to prevent me from having to replace the distributor? From what I've read here, once the cam sensor gets dirty enough to cause problems, it's basically replacement time... Any truth to that?
