Air Suspension: 1998 RR

Hi,

I thought the suspension on my 1998 RR was taking longer than usual to pump up, from "access" to "standard". Now it seems to be OK but while investigating it I found that the compressor continuously goes through a cycle of about 5 minutes "on" then a brief "off" of about 7 seconds before starting again: this is with the vehicle stationary, engine running, doors shut and the system pumped up.

Can anyone say if this is normal? If so, where is the compressed air going? Not from the exhaust on the valve block and there seem to be no leaks on the air spring pipes or the air reservoir pipes -- both stay pumped up overnight.

TIA,

Stephen

sounds like the seals are failing in the compressor - mine started doing that about 18 months ago - just acquired a replacement compressor - now have to get the courage up to change it

My 2000 RR rarely goes into access on it's own, but mostly the rear goes slowly goes into half-way between access & standard and the front drops less than an inch.

Going up and down is pretty fast when it's done manually, however...

Is this indicative of a problem?

Yes. Not good. BTW, the front should drop 1st by 70% then the rear, then the front the remaining 30% then the rear. So's your headlights don't blind oncoming LR owners.

You a new owner? I got nervous when i first got my '98 4.0 4 months ago, & the compressor seemed to go on all the time. It does need to go on fairly frequently, more than you'd think; when you brake in city traffic, the car attempts to level itself as you come to a stop. This levelling is going on all the time. On a long trip, it seems to settle down & not start up nearly so often.

The questionable behaviour only occurs when I put the truck in park and turn off the key - the owner's manual suggests that it will go into access mode on its own, which it rarely does.

I don't care unless this is symptomatic of a bigger problem(s). What problem could this be pointing to?

Thanks

No, the car should not go into access mode unless access mode is preselected. When you lock the vehicle it should then self-level (to account of unloading of driver, passengers and other baggage), and do so every 6 hours until there is insufficient air pressure or the vehicle is sitting on the bump stops.
