Thanks to thise who offered help re my original problem:-
Suddenly happened today.... no tacho and charge light on unless disco revved

Yes it was a duff alternator.. bearing broken down and contacts gone. Go various prices for replacement Scary from LR Main Dealer (£400 +) Eventually got it reconditioned at "Alternate" in Ravensthorpe west yorkshire near Dewsbury. £75. Works a treat + 12 month warrenty. Their numbers in the book
