Alternators and Tachometers

Hello,

Alternators and tachometers again!

110 200Tdi

I got a marine tachometer off ebay which would do 6, 8 and 10 pulses/rev from the tacho. Now I assume that as the landrover alternator is a three phase, it gives 3 pulses/rev?

So, what does it appear that the tacho is reading 2 x higher than I would expect.

If I am giving 3 pulses/rev and have it set at 6 pulses/rev it should read low. Or am I missing something....

Cheers

Peter

The alternator is running faster than the engine. Factor in the ratio of the crankshaft and alternator pulley sizes.

What sort of marine tacho is it? Some that are meant for outboards use a pick-up around the plug leads and the pulses are ignition pulses.

Jeff,

Good question, but it was designed for an outboard with an alternator, that's why I thought I may be on a safe bet.

Unfortunately not though! (Life never is easy!)
