Apologies if I've asked this before ...

... but if I did then I can't remember the answer, so I need to ask again anyway - it's old age creeping up on me (at about a zillion miles an hour).

Is it possible to drop the sump on a Discovery 1 (300Tdi) with the engine in-situ?

The engine's been bangin' like a shit-house door in a gale for the best part of a year and it might be time to take a look-see if it's the big ends or mains ... but I'm too lazy to take the engine out ;-)

If anyone has done this before then I'd appreciate any tips to make the job easier/quicker.

TIA

Yeah, mine's leasking too :-)

Actually, the leak is really small - right at the back, hard up against the bell housing - but SWMBO is moaning about drops of oil on the drive ...

I figured if the sump will come out from underneath then I'd check the bearings while I'm in there.

Yes, dropped my when I had my Disco 1. The takeup and strainer were really badly clogged. Spray them with brake cleaner and watch it all drop off. Clean up the sump and use plenty of sealer when re- fitting. Mine worked wonders.

Bryan,

Am I right in thinking that I have to jack the chassis up but let the suspension drop to make enough clearance for the sump to come off? Or can I just drive it up on the ramps - which will make me feel a lot safer when underneath :-)

Ramps certainly feel safer than jacks, but if they go the chances are that it will be more spectacular - I'd always make sure that you have something to back them up, even if it's just a farm jack to take some of the weight when you start to hear the creaking sounds!

Bob,

Thanks for the concern over my safety. These ramps were built to support DAF army trucks - about 7tonnes - and are checked annually so I feel pretty safe with them :-)
