Snorkel for Defender TD5

Having tested both on Discos and Defender I tend to like Mantec ones more just because they are made of metal. Mind you though Mantec has also produced a cheaper plastic one so it is the same thing after all. What I have to add though is that it appears that a Mantec snorkel makes 200 and 300Tdi Discovery and Defender vehicle operate much better than the standard air filter housing breathing route through the engine bay. It appears that fresh and cleaner air from the outside does make a difference after all. I seem to remember that the Mantec snorkels have a 450 CFM rating suitable for the 3.5 and up to 3.9 V8 petrol engines and 2.5 turbodiesel engines need less than that so there is no air restriction problem for those snorkels on Tdi or TD5 engine applications.

I personally use a Safari, the design has the look of creating a "ram effect" and I have noticed no loss / gain on my mildly tweaked 200 tdi. But I know others hate them and would rather use the mushroom topped types.

I have a Safari snorkel in my loft (no not so I can take the house wading!), if you fit them round the wrong way they do look a bit odd, sort of like John Inman's wrists from Are You Being Served, or like some kind of black swan with an enormous 4x4 carbuncle on its arse. If you fit it the right way around (with the mouth facing backwards) then it doesn't look so bad, the brittle mesh doesn't get cracked so easily, and also stops bow waves splashing into the snorkel when it's still 6 inches above the water level.

Mind you I'd rather not take it in that deep....

I also have a remapped Defender with big intercooler and did every kind of experiment with the parts, cat, snorkel, K&N Filter and so on. The airflow is remarkably reduced when you use a snorkel, the only one wich compensates the reduced airflow nearly completely is the german made Ex-Tec but it is awfully expensive. My solution is a second undertray of the airbox and I change it for use with or without snorkel, it´s done in some minutes and does the job.

I'm going to fit a safari to my 110 TD5, the man at my local specialist swears by them and said his makes no real difference to the performance.

Who's mapping and upgrade did you use and what did you think of them?

also who are you insured with and did it make a big difference to cost, as I'm thinking of doing the same to mine
