Cant Lock the Diff

Hi,

I have a 96 Disco which I bought about 2 months ago.

I have noticed that I cannot put the transfer lever into the "diff lock" position. I have tried whilst the main box is in neutral, whilst the clutch it down and whilst moving when in both high ratio, low ratio and when transfer box was in neutral.

I have pushed it accross as hard as I possibly can, but it just will not move accross!!

The garage I bought the car from said that if difflock has never been used, it can become a bit stiff. They say if i take the car in to them, they will rectify it for me free of charge. However, a round trip the garage is well over 100 miles, so if anybody knows what the problem is likely to be then i would rather save myself the trip and fix it myself.

Or could this signify a more series problem with the car?

Thanks, Rick

Yes it is prob becuase it has never been used. Crawl underneath and you should be able to see the linkage - try a good squirt with wd40 and let it soak for a while.

Vince uttered summat worrerz funny about:

Indeed, I felt a berk when suffering this on our '97 a couple of years ago... fortunately the chaps at Lakeland landrover were used to it. A few minuted of heavy duty jiggling had it sorted but theres nothing like regular use to keep it moving.

What you are suffering from is something called "newness" ;-)

Worked a treat!

Lots of WD40 and a smothering of grease once it had freed up. Working perfectly now!

I found that I need to "work" the transfer case about once a week to keep it functional. Sounds like it hasn't been done in your case. The LR shop manual will show you how to lube the linkage amongst other tasks. If you don't have access to one [the manual that is], let me know and I can send the necessary information to you via email attachment or telefax. Figure about 2-3 hours of work and don't forget a six pack of brewskies to make to time go by quicker. Cheers!
