Cheeky F...ers

I noticed on the CCTV that a couple of people were showing an interest in my clollection of Landies outside. Watching them for a bit it became apparent that they were writing the registration numbers down. They were not the usual 'enthusiastic number plate collector' type - they were a middle aged couple...

Odd, I thought, the Bailiff isn't due for a good couple of weeks :-)

So, I went out and asked them what they were doing.

They ignored me - point blank - as if I wasn't there.

So I accidentally removed the pad upon which they'd been jotting. (Note, it was not my intention to permanently deprive them of their property).

This seemed to have the effect of getting their attention (well, that and the appearance of Max). I offered to call the police, as I believed they were up to no good - possibly 'casing the place'.

After a few constructive and polite requests to know WTF they were doing, they mentioned that they were collecting registration numbers of, and I quote "Jeeps and other off road 4x4 cars".

I had little time to continue this interesting liaison as I was late for a meeting. I mentioned to them that they were currently being recorded on the CCTV and that I believed by their actions I was having my privacy invaded (yes, I had to think quicky as I was late, probably not the best avenue really), and finished by mentioning that dogs bite (Note, I did not threaten them that 'my' dog would bite them. I was merely making an observation that some dogs do bite).

They scuttled away, rather quickly - up the road, into a red Nissan Micra and 'ked 'orf... Didn't get their registration - b*gger.

Dunno what's behind this, may be a heads up to some form of list being collated by the 'anti' brigade - one would have thought such a list would have been better prepared by listing vehicles that were actually 'off road', not legally parked outside on the road...

either that or they're about to get 'em towed away as scrap.

This is very worrying. May I forward this post to our active GLASS contingent on mud-club?

Sounds very dubious don't it, especially as they ignored you, it doesn't sound like simple innocent number plate collecting does it!

"They scuttled away, rather quickly - up the road, into a red Nissan Micra and 'ked 'orf... Didn't get their registration - b*gger."

Wot, not even on the pad you swiped off them, or did the dog eat that ;)

"red Nissan"

Did it have a private hire plate on the back, the the two, where they wearing turbans?

Feel free. I'd thought about x-posting it myself to a few other usenet groups, but thought I'd wait and see if I were actually well off the mark with my suspicians.

Interesting. Where abouts are you (roughly, I don't want to get close enough to be bitten by your dog) so that others can look out for these strange people? Maybe we can start collecting their number plate.

Cheers,

M.

Sounds like anti-greenlaners or something. Very strange. I'm assuming they'd deliberately drove toward your own home, got out of their Nissan and jotted down your reg, or could they have been just passing by? If it was a deliberate action - it's very sinister. Actively looking for 4X4's in the area...dodgy. Have you been driving anywhere you shouldn't really have been lately? I woke up a couple of weeks ago, went to the landy and the bonnet was up slightly....very worrying; check everythings there...clench teeth, turn key....phew!!! Must have been me not shutting it properly the day before!

Frightening how you have to live in the south. Not trying to be facetious but it is only lately that I've taken to removing the key from my vehicle as the insurance poplicy says something about it. (Bloody nuisance, always forget and have to go back into the house!).

Out in the islands, the only time I locked my doors was when I was home -- to stop people wandering in as they were inclined to do after a few drams without knocking!!

The hotel on the south of North Uist used to leave the door open when they went to bed so anyone coming across from Benbecula at low tide could get a dram at the bar. These self-service customers were trusted to leave the money on the bar! But that all changed when the causeway was built. No more frozen toes to use as an excuse for a warm at the fire and a dram before heading off north!

I'm not really on any 'passing by' routes, plus my road is a fairly well hidden cul-de-sac. We do occasionally get people thinking not though, as it 'looks' like it's a through road. I guess they could also have been shopping and parked their car just up the road for convenience, but to be honest, Friday lunchtime is not overly busy and there would have been plenty of other parking spaces...

I'm fairly well know locally which is actually pretty good. Along with this most people around here also know of my feelings toward illegal and irresponsible vehicle use (on and off the road).

Nope, never have actually, and none of my motors are muddy or look like they've been off road recently (actually, none _have_ been off road recently - sad).

The whole incident was just very 'odd', and a tad unsettling.

To be honest - it is pretty safe here - given it's pretty much slap bang in the middle of Sheffield! I often leave the cars unlocked (don't leave the keys in them, though) and we did once go out for the night and leave the front door wide open...

was wondering.

I met a local bloke here who was slightly involved, and he asked me of the whereabouts of you-know-who, I said that he was last heard of holidaying at her majesty's pleasure, and said chap said "cool, you've made my day" OWTTE.

Ooh, now you've started something....

Drag the police away from the 'REAL here and now incidents'....what? You mean disputes between neighbours? Sitting in a van with two cameras out the back on a road where 2 temporary speed cameras are already working and within 800 yards of each other on the same side of the carriageway? (The A55 roadworks just before Queensferry.) Granted there is a need for policing. There are some good policemen. There ARE a lot of patronising, fascist bastard policemen, and a lot of racist ones too as proven by journalists! The police get no sympathy from me...don't even start me on Specials! Surely if a policeman is at a 'REAL' incident, and a call comes through of an alleged weapon being seen (not used , no-one injured,) common sense would priority to the more serious crime. I've never been into drugs, violent crime, car crime, robbery, fraud etc. but I have been in trouble for hammering two (yes, TWO...) nails into a fence post, when I'd spent all day putting a fence up in the garden and was finishing at around half seven on a summers evening. A neighbour complained and the police came within 15 minutes - either they weren't busy that day, or the bloody neighbour told them I had a weapon - your guess is as good as mine! Just MY view, and opinion of the police.

Don't think he said that...

Or that. It seems you don't have any more idea what they were doing than anyone else. Quite likely speed cameras, but possibly something else.

Same as any profession.

It was suggested that one should call the police and tell them about a non-existent weapon. Is it OK to call the Fire Brigade to an incident where someone is suspected of having a cigarette?

Sounds more like a grudge (and one that should perhaps be directed at your neighbour for doing exactly what Lee was ranting against).

I'll tell you exactly what they were doing! It's called ANPR and it's got nothing to do with speed cameras at all. They have cameras reading the number plates of vehicles going past and if you aren't taxed or insured, or if you are wanted by police then you'll be pulled over. As long as you're insured with a licence you have nothing to worry about. If you're not then (in my opinion) you deserve everything you get.

How do I know this? I did a report on the system for Radio Wales a couple of months ago and spent about an hour inside the said van.

I've not often heard of Sheffield referred to as "the south", apart from by my Geordie wife of course.

I guess most things are south of you Derry...

Yes if it's a real incident and not a fabricated "come quick they have an AK47 and are writing down my registration.". Don't however get me wrong, I'd not fault anyone for putting in a call to the effect "There are some middle aged people out side taking down the registration numbers of my vehicles, I thought I should let you know as it seems dodgie"

Didn't ask for any. Didn't ask you to comment on specials either. I'm always keen to listen to the views of others though.

Yes, your right 100 % spot on in a completely right kind of way... but in ths instance where is the weapon apart from a fabricated one to get a response as suggested by the poster to whom I replied? How is the officer supposed to know that the whole matter is a lie? That is my whole point!

True, sounds rather harsh and I know alot of other tales of woe too. Some are even justified so I won't begin to pretend that the Police walk on water.

No problem...... whats your registration number again ? ;-)

On the subject of which lets say you were mentally challanged and for some odd reason collecting numberplates at random with your equally challenged mate. This is actually a course of therapy which you have been encouraged to undertake rather than basket weaving, sort of a care in the community keeping folk entertained kind of thing. Anyway some bloke with a purple beard (who clearly keeps guns in the cellar if the fleet of exmilitary vehicles out side are a fair stereotype) comes along and looks angry snatches your pad , then does one. Minutes later as you pootle along looking for more extremist vehicles your pulled over by a number of Police officers who have a large snarly dog (you've just recently been reminded that dogs bite so this alone causes a sudden release of brown adrenalin) but to add to the situation the rather abrupt police officer is pointing a weapon towards you and telling you to get on the floor. ( This is perfectly justified because infact this thread is now so far from the truth that the police were told you have a pistol in your pocket when seen walking off ) You reach into your pocket and pull out your backup note pad and point it to the officer for him to read all the numberplates of extremist vehicles that you've collected. The dog grips your buttocks at the same time as you hear a loud bang........................................................................ ......................................................................

no problem, pleased you got it off your chest. I'd rather clear up misguided advice here than deal with it later.

bang........................................................................

Erm.... I'm not sure that reads quite right... ah what the hell.. finishing partly written stories seems to be flavour of the month.
