Clutch

How long would you expect a clutch to last on a DiscoII. Car driven carefully and mainly on bitumen. Steve W (in Aus)

My Disco has done 220000 in ten years km here in Zimbabwe. I am just about to change the clutch because the release bearing is making horrendous noises. But I have had no slippage etc.

I do quite a lot of town driving as well, but we don't have huge traffic jams so that probably helps with clutch wear.

Clutch life depends an awful lot on driving style, I'm not heavy on clutches. Had to do the one in my DII at 40,000 miles but it was a second hand motor and I don't know what it's life had been like in the first

30,000... I have a sneaky feeling it was urban school transport in the week and hubbys play thing at the weekend.

It's now at 80,000 miles and I don't expect to have to do the clutch ever again and I hope to get to near 200,000 miles before its end of life.

Depends on the driver, I've never needed a clutch change in my cars, even though I've done 80,000 miles in the landy. Some people can go through them very quickly I'm told, garage mechanics might be able to give you some figures on how fast they can go with a heavy clutch-using driver.

Steve,

I've just had some work done on my Disco II clutch as there was a horrendous noise when I put my foot on the clutch. I thought that the thrust bearing had gone, but it turned out to be the flywheel!

I ended up having the diaphragm, flywheel and thrust bearing changed, but the garage said that the clutch wasn't worn and didn't need changing.

NB. I have used the garage for the past 7 years.

Thanks for the replies :-) The one thing that concerns me is the two-piece flywheel. Apparantly, the springs get very weak between the two sections and that's where the problem starts. The clutch plate itself is fine I believe.

The other really bad problem is the spigot shaft bush, it is really noisy when de-clutching, mainly on cold mornings. Is there any quick-fix for these things without dropping the box?
