Defender handbrake

The handbrake itself works properly but the two warning lights stay on

Can someone please tell me where the switch is on a 1996 Defender 300tdi

Many thanks

TWO warning lights? .... makes me wonder if it's indicating something other than a handrake 'problem'. Anything in the driver's manual?

Thw switch is at the base of the lever. Visible, I think, if you peel back the gaiter.

I couldn't find a wiring diagram but normally this switch grounds the circuit. It's just as likely that you have a wire that has shorted to ground as a faulty switch.

Will strip off the gaiter tomorrow and hopefully see a switch - thanks Dougal

Yes there are two warning lights, one for the handbrake and one as a brake warning light tho' heaven knows why it comes on with the handbrake It was the same with my previous 90 300 tdi

Its not a fluid level sensor is it?

Can't recall if there is one on the defender. Only other obvious light would be pad wear sensors.. again not got them on my 1990 TD.

Got it sorted The switch was indeed under the gaiter and the tongue at the back of the handbrake was missing it so a simple application of a bit of brute force bent it out a little so than all is now well

Many thanks to all

You learn something every day. I thought that there would be only one warning light for all brake issues - must have been good times when cost cutting was not a priority!

Glad all now sorted.

Had that problem with my '96 TDI 300 a couple of weeks back

Turned out to be a FLUID Level problem

Garage checked levels and consistency and renewed fluid

All ok now

Mine's done that for years, as did the one I had a test drive in, in

1996...

If I push down the hand brake they go off.

Under the gaiter somewhere...
