Diff swap?

Hi all



A thought has just occurred to me on the way to work:



If I have a Series 2a which is still a bit undergeared, despite the fitting of 235/85 tyres, which has 4.7:1 diffs...



And I have a trialler, which would not be harmed and might be improved with lower gearing, and has 90 axles and 3.54:1 diffs...



Can I just swap the diffs over? Or is that WAY too simple?

Yes and no - maybe - should be OK. You will need to check if the splines on the half shafts are OK for the diffs otherwise that's OK.

Also, check that the axles are the same type, you cannot swap a Rover diff for a Sailsbury one......

Thanks for the information, chaps. The S2a diffs are Rover, I'm pretty sure (or the other one, but not Salisbury), and I'm also sure that they are all

10-spline too. I'll give it a go, next free weekend ;-)

It's an (almost) cost-free option, which I like.

Why is the Salisbury axle so called?

Are they possibly made by a company called Salisbury?

Something that I've wanted to know for a while but been afraid to ask for fear of sounding stupid!

How can you tell the difference between a Rover and Sals?

My 110 has got a Salisbury rear, which AFAIK means it's a heavy duty axle. I think that all 110's got them. The diff bulge isn't as rounded as the normal diff housing on the front axle, the bulge is larger and they have a bolt on diff cover at the rear of the axle. It also hangs down a bit lower due to the larger size and mine regularly picks up loads of mud where it scrapes the ground.

A rover axle is designed on the ENV priciple, where the entire diff assembly (crownwheel, pinion etc) is bolted into the axle casing. The diff assembly can be removed complete from the casing by the ring of bolts on the pinion side of the axle.

A Sailsbury (yes, designed by Sailsbury) axle the diff/pinion are inside the casing, and cannot be removed except by strecthing the casing with a special spreader, and taking the crownwheel assembly out through the rear of the axle (the opposite side of the diff)

Sailsbury axles are inherently stronger than Rover/ENV style diffs, as the load is taken by the entire casing, rather than the diff carrier. The advantage of a Rover/ENV diff is that the differential can easily be removed and dismantled for repair/servicing. It is also a lot easier to shim the diff with a ENV, as to do so with a salisbury requires streching the casing to put it in, miking it up, and removing it again if the mesh is wrong.

The easy way to tell is to look under the rear of the vehicle, if there is an access plate on the back of the axle, it's Salisbury, if there itsn't, its a Rover (or possibly an ENV if an early S2/2A 1ton model)

If I may get into this conversation.

I am considering getting limited diff's front and rear for my 96 Disco. I can get them with the Standard 3.52 gears or I can change to 4.11 gears. I keep going back and forth on this. Any one else done something similar
