Excellent! Not too bad a price either. I take it this is the final outcome from the discusision / diagnosis a few months back?

Mike.

eeek. mind, that includes labour. From memory:

cam, standard 3.5 or 3.9 is about 60 quid followers about 4 quid each, so 64 quid

mind, if you do pushrods, rockers and rocker shafts your adding erm... about another ton-twenty, I think. Plus you need a new front cover gasket and there's no point in not replacing the timing chain and gears, which are about 15 quid too. Say about 280 for parts, if you did the rockers etc. If it was *just* cam and followers, then it sounds a bit on the pricey side. Unless there's some reason why the disco bodywork makes it unduly awkward, I'd reckon on about 4-5 hours.

All of the above including the rockers were done, new oil temp thermostat, oil and air filters, oil change. Considerably cheaper than another engine. He did say it was a shame that my Dad isn't alive as he would have had no hesitation in taking it to bits and putting it back together because my Dad loved nothing more than spending all weekend in the garage rebuilding engines.

I don't think he ever bought a car that was running properly and his favourite one was a Triumph 2.5pi called SYD, that arrived outside our house on the back of a lorry and after that he had the Rover SDI with a V8 - also a non-runner from the car auctions.

Any way the Discovery is totally different to drive now its done and Bruce was quite happy to pay the money for a stress free job!

fair enough then. there's a good bit of work there, and about 300 of parts at retail prices - if you cost yer own time then you come to getting on for that much anyway to DIY.

and rebuilding 'em does improve things, 'specially if the cam's badly worn.

The mechanic fished it out the bin to show us and it was well worn. Bruce is happy with it anyway. Its extended the life of the car for a few years more!
