Fitting an overdrive to an SIII

Hi all,

I've just got a second hand overdrive that I intend to fit to my SIII, and I've a few questions before I start:

From the instructions I downloaded some time ago, it looks like I don't have to drain the oil out of the gearbox before I start - is this correct?

There's no gasket with the overdrive - assuming the gasket between the rear cover and gearbox isn't useable, will I get away with making my own one using gasket paper? Otherwise, what are the options?

Anything else to watch out for?

Thanks, Andrew

You will need a bushing that goes with the overdrive to fit in lieu of the backplate off the gearbox - no doubt it has a really technical name but I don'tknow it!.

One of those two links should get you a copy of the fitting instructions.

Gearbox oil can stay in - the two are separate. When I fitted mine I used a homemade paper gasket with a light spray of instant gasket stuff on top - I think the paper would have been enough in any case.

Fiddly bits that you may need are the linkage parts and the two bolts that hold the linkage support to the top of the gearbox - if you have an extra linkage rod I'd be interested :-). You'll need to cut a hole in the seatbox to pass the linkage lever through - we bodged one using a drill and a jigsaw, covered the mess up with a transfer lever boot and holder - looks OK.

Correct.

Make a paper one if you like, or splash out about 20p on a real one!

Just the one that usually catches us out - make sure the "spare" tabs on the mainshaft tab washer are bent out of the way, or the unit will not quite slide into place.
