Gear Box Numbers

Hi all,

Does anybody have a list or know of the allocation of gearbox numbers etc:

i.e. an LT77?

What type does a series 2.25 have?

Regards

not an LT77. LT77 is a 5-speeder, fitted to discos, range rovers and 90/110 from about erm... whenever they became 5-speed up to about 1995, when the R380 took over.

Not sure the series ones have a number in the same way... earlier RR 4-speed are LT95.

Is the R380 a better box ?. I ve got a "clunk" in the drivetrain and if it's the box thats FUBAR would it be better to fit the R380 instead of th LT77?

Series gearboxes are of two types - Series 1/2/2a with synchromesh on 3&4 only, and the Series 3 with synchromesh on all four gears. Both types have a letter after the gearbox number that records modifications during production. There are no other designations such as LT77. The boxes are interchangeable (except you have to change the clutch operating mechanism as well), so you will find some S1/2/2a with the all synchromesh box (late production 2a, home, station wagons were factory fitted) and even some S3 with the older box, as it is reputed to be stronger. (The Stage 1 V8 had the LT95 gearbox) Similarly the suffix number of the gearbox is likely to not match the age of the vehicle. All Series Landrovers had a four speed gearbox, and a very few have been converted to other five speed boxes, probably mostly LT77. JD

They don't have an LT77, the gearbox number usually has a letter on the end of the serial number that indicates the type of box, ie IIa without synchro, or later SII with, the Xfer box also has a suffix letter which indicates the ratio and/or type

R380 is generally a bit better. Synchro on Reverse (!) and so on.

but early R380s had the same output shaft/transfer gear problems as the LT77. Not sure when the cross-drilled gear was introduced.

The Series boxes are devided up by a series of suffix letters, from none, A, B.... to F (if memory serves) - a lot of the parts are not interchangeable between boxes with different suffix letters. The

1 Ton box also has its one perculiarities, and SII and SIII versions. And then there's transfer boxes..........
