Gearbox strangeness

Sorry if this has been asked before (I did google but couldn't find it)

2 months ago a bought a 1991 110 200TDi from a reputable specialist dealer. I was very pleased up until Monday. On a shopping trip to Ludlow, I tried to pull away from some traffic lights - bang - no drive in any gear at all, and a very sickly crunchy sound when I tried to get drive.

Anyway, buying from a reputable specialist paid off, as they had a 3 month major mechanical warranty. One phone call later and they advised me to get the RAC to drop it off with them.

I called them yesterday and was told the mainshaft had gone and taken the transfer box and gearbox with it. It would all be replaced under warranty and I could collect today.

I picked it up today and the gearbox feels lovely and light : )

But there is a quite loud whirring sound in all gears which gets louder as I get faster. Is this just the gearbox running in?

Also the ratios seem out compared to the old box - I can now cruise at 35-40 in 5th compared to 45-50 before, and now doing 55 seems like I'm thrashing the poor thing. Is this normal with a new gear box - is it possible the new box has differnt ratios to the old one, or does it just need running in.

As the garage is shut now for xmas I thought someone hear could ease my worries, as I'm a bit uneducated with LR mechanical bits.

TIA

MAG

Glad to hear it all got fixed OK.

It's possible that the old transfer box may have had higher ratio gears fitted - apparently it's easy to swap it for a Discovery one.

Gives you a better set of high ratios for normal road use while leaving low box unchanged.

If the dealer has replaced with a standard 110 part.....

This could be a running in issue - but should go quite quickly (500 miles or so - about what you may do over the break).

No

Yes, but seems very odd.

Go double check the hi-lo ratio selector - just in case :-)

If it's 1991 then I would guess it's an LT77S gearbox. They had a higher

5th in the disco than the 90/110, but it seems yours is lower, so we can probably rule out the gearbox being "wrong".

The transfer box, which will be an LT230, comes in lots of different high range ratios, from 1.003:1 up to 1.667:1. A TDi 110 should have a

1.410:1 final drive, but it's possible that the new one that has been put in is the one from a 4 cyl petrol or NA diesel 110, which is 1.667:1. This would mean at the same revs you were doing 45 before you would be doing 38 now, and a previous 50mph would now be about 42. This ties in reasonably well with your numbers.

That is my best guess. My source for all the numbers/etc is:

I checked this - running in hi

What sort of top speed should I expect with the standard box - 55mph seems pretty low - withthe old box doing 60 seemed to have plenty in reserve.

Could be - it's ex Environment Agency, so I got no history with it - the log book even says no previous owners, as does hpi.

On or around Wed, 24 Dec 2003 20:39:48 -0000, "MAG" enlightened us thusly:

make sure they put oil in it... and that's a serious comment - it's been known.

if it's a S/H box it could be from a TD or a NA 90/110, which would give it lower ratios than a TDi.

Good point. That's why we broke our LT95 for the second time in Iceland. The place which had repaired it the first time round had put the wrong oil in, and not enough of it. So as soon as we got on the motorway, it died horribly.

New one on me...

The ratio thing has been discussed

Do new gearboxes come supplied with oil I wonder ?? Worth checking!

Can't think of any courier that would allow that. The only recon box I ever got didn't have any, no notices about what to fill it with or anything... one is just expected to know and not forget I suppose :(

I suppose if you buy a "new" vehicle you expect it to behave but I bought an old one, so I get what I deserve.
