guide price for an axle

Dec 04, 2004 7 Replies

I have a friend with a S3 that's been laid-up for a while, I understand the front axle case is badly corroded/holed.

Can anyone give me a guide price for a replacement front axle complete, either recon or known-good? And does anyone have one kicking around? Vehicle is in surrey.

I was happy to give £100 for a pair of stage 1 axles with Diffs known good with the Servo and master cylinder.

Then again you will may around £35 to £50 just for a diff so depends what your getting in the deal.

There should be loads of axles knocking around. Just make sure it's a like for like or an upgrade .. Ie LWB front onto a SWB not vice versa or you'll have lickle brakes.

Recon price for a S3 axle is probably prohibitive. Replacement casing is listed at around the £300 mark.

If it's just the case which has gone, but the diff etc is ok, then suggest you look around for a cheap axle on Ebay, and put your diff & swivels onto it. That way you don't need to worry about wether the axle you're buying is any good.

Diffs the same?

I found that 35 quid was about the going rate for a lwb front axle.

Try ebay - usually about £40

or weld the casing up.

That's what I did on mine, but I'm assuming it's too far gone for that in his case.
