Gunge in pipes

Hi peeps.

Ok, I no very little about my landy[1], but fortunately I have some visual aids to help me. :)

I got 2 free Hiclones recently so I fitted them to try them out (hey, they're free). I took this[2] pipe off to fit the hiclone and found it full of black, sludgy, gunge[3]. Possibly something to do with the fact that when I had the car, there was no air filter fitted.

I've been reading about people flushing intercoolers and was wondering if this kind of gunge is to be expected and should I be doing somethign about it. There was a coating of about 3-8mm of gunge on the pipe.

Thanks to all who replied about the wipers as well. With the weather getting "interesting" soon, I'm going to have to sort that out.

If I was you I'd take that pipe back of and throw the Hiclones away.

When I flushed my intercooler I had to remove this pipe and though it had a thick oily coating it was only just a coating, nothing more. Have you now cleaned it out? If there is that much muck in that pipe I bet the intercooler is also bunged up a bit too.

Also on the intercoller flushing front, I've had a change of opinion on whether or not it made a difference to mine. I just spent 10 days in Dorset where they have got some *big* hills, how does being reduced to second gear sound! Since flushing, the engine seems to rev out a lot easier and doesn't appear to smoke as much under the sort of load those hills produce.

Not a huge difference but it's something.

aye, 'appen I orttra do that to ours. was too busy changing heads and timing belts afore.

I did however advance the pump timing a bit (techincal term there... about 6 degrees, probably, ish) as it's always felt very "flat" taking off from rest. sounds and feels a bit more lively now.
