Head Gasket ?

Checked the water today and it was a little low again, it was last topped up at Christmas.

Also checked the oil and the dipstick was covered in brown sludge.

I presume the Head Gasket is on its way out, though so far there has been no noticable overheating and the sludge was not present after I wiped it off and went for a short journey.

If it is not the Head Gasket and water getting in, any other suggestions as to the sludge ?

Condensation forming in the rocker cover/crankcase because of the cold weather (I assume - it's 23 degrees here) you have been having, combined with the engine not being run on long trips. Don't worry about it - it'll go away on it's own as the weather warms up and/or you do some long runs.

Bearing in mind the time of year it's possibly just condensation forming in the coolest parts of the engine..... perfectly normal at this time of year. Steve the grease

Come to think of it, it has been sitting there doing nothing all week as it is a lot cheaper to use the bus around town..
