Help: Ring & Pinion

Please help:

I have a 96 Discovery, 4.0, AT, NAS.

While traveling down the highway at 25 MPH I heard and unsettling noise from the rear. I immediately hit the brakes and threw the car in neutral as the diff made a LOUD clunk. I put the car back in drive and heard some grinding. Not good.

Actuated the diff lock and limped home. I did not hear any more grinding for the rest of the ride.

I was able to get the diff off the car and low an behold the planetary gears took a crap. After a complete inspection...

The ring appears to be in good shape, no missing or mangled teeth. The pinion on the other hand and 5 chipped teeth, not too bad just a little at the top where it makes contact on the inside of the ring. Again... the ring is in good shape no teeth missing.

Questions:

Should I replace the pinion? I can see if it was worse, but... I don't want to be in this predicament later.

Locker, LSD or stock? I am a moderate off roader and it only makes sense to upgrade to a locker at this point. I am to understand that the Detroit locker is far stronger than stock. I have a LSD in the front already with no problems.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I would have thought ,if you can budget for it, replacing the bits you feel may be suspect now, especially if you are going down the route of lockers etc. You'd be pretty pissed to find yourself on your knees in mud or somewhere rocky later on :)

You could buy my RAV4 instead....

FWIW, I would replace both the ring and pinion, maybe even just find a good second hand diff?? If you leave something in there that isn't perfect, you just know it'll come back and bite you - when you least expect or need it. Wayne, O.T., but ever tried doing a clutch on a rav? Front suspension remove, steering rack remove, drop engine and box and split on the deck! Not a nice job. Badger.

Printed out and left on pillow. Hmm, might leave it for breakfast instead...

How did you do the petrol one? My mate asked me to give him a hand in his garage, and the gearbox just physically couldn't be separated and removed - there just wasn't anywhere near enough clearance, hence the dropping of the crossmember/suspension etc after a phone call to a friend of his that had previously worked for toymotor. I s'pose there could be differences for different petrol engines, are there many in the range? This one was a 4-cyl. Badger.

it was last year so memory a bit rusty. took subframe off with bottom arms, driveshafts out left everything else in car IIRC I used a cradle to hold the engine in place while I undid all the bolts holding the box to the engine. I seem to remember the diesel being easier than the petrol. I think the diesel was a 02 plate.

The one I helped with was an older model, so I suppose they might have re-engineered maybe the shaping of the inner wing slightly to allow the box to come off in situ? The toymota man we spoke to said you could also pull it out the top, but you had to take just about all the engine ancilliaries off to do so! Must admit, if I had the driveshafts and subframe/arms off, I'd just have dropped the whole thing out myself rather than work in the confines of the engine bay to split the box off. Methinks I'll be sticking to Landrover products given choice! Badger.
