hotwire oddness

On the hotwire system there's this gadget which adjusts the idle speed according to engine load. Or that's the theory. Most of the time, mine does. Sometimes, it decides it's going to idle at 1500, or sometimes 2000 rpm.

This *appears* to be an electronics fault rather than the stepper motor sticking. Turning the engine off and restarting it resets it to normal behaviour. I'd've thought that a sticky stepper motor would've stayed stuck, once stuck, so to speak. Turning off and on clears the fault almost without fail.

any thoughts? At some point I did the various diagnostics on throttle position sensor and so forth, and they appeared correct.

Austin, try giving the stepper motor a sharp rap with the edge of a 17mm ring spanner next time it sticks at a fast idle!!!!!! I've lost count of the number of these I've seen sticking. Nothing apparently wrong with the motor, as you rightly say, but replace with new and all's well! Bloody landrovers. Hahaha. Badger.

Austin,

I have a spare working stepper here if you want to swap it out to see if it is the cause. If you want it, email me on snipped-for-privacy@ohnomud-club.com with your snailmail addy. (remove the ohno to mail!)

I spose I'll have to sort it one day. odd that it resets so reliably when turned off, mind. Chances are it is the stepper motor or associated gubbins, I bet it don't come apart either.

The message from Austin Shackles contains these words:

as I recall it can only be taken apart if it is working, remove from vehicle apply battery so that it unscrews itself then unclip halves, or unclip halves and connect battery to unscrew itself, I forget which way round. I can't check back as I sort of stamped my broken one into the concrete once I realised you could only repair a working one! said a few
