I have heard an urban myth (?) that if a Rover MEMS engine management goes into 'limp-home' mode, usually because of some sensor malfunction, you can reset it to normal by pressing the throttle to the floor 5 times - with ignition either on or off - the stories vary.



Anybody know if this has any truth - it's hard to tell for sure whether you've fixed it, as limp-home probably isn't that much less powerful than the awesome 120 BHP they say you normally get from a 1.6 K-series.



Any other suggested methods to clear/reset supposed/imagined fault conditions in this ECU?

My 1.4 hit limp-home mode once, limited RPM to about 2200. You'll know if it hits it.

Limp-home mode will clear itself once the fault is fixed, if it doesn't then disconnect the battery for 20 minutes and try again. You would notice it as you'd eat through petrol.

Turn Ignition to II, and fully press and release the accelerator 5 times within 20 seconds and wait. This procedure resets the stepper motor which controls the idle speed, i don't know if it does anything else. To be sure it' s working, open the bonnet and leave the door open, you'll hear it whirring and clicking.

When you come to start the engine it may take an extra 1-2 seconds turning over before it kicks in, and the idle speed will settle down after a while, usually after 2 or 3 more engine starts.

No that just resets the idle speed stepper motor.
