Could a poor earth on the ignition coil condenser cause misfiring under load ?
Bugger it ain't a condenser is it (even if it looks like one) but a resistor, still have no idea what its for and if a bad erth could have been causing problems
Its not a ballast resistor is it Larry ?

Whatever it is, its the thingy on the positive side of the coil that was not making a very good erth because the screw holding it and the coil on, will not tighten up securely. What exactly does it do anyway ?

if it's from the live side of the coil to earth, then it's an interference suppressor. It'll be a capacitor in this case. You can safely remove it...
