Imperial tools.

Hmm, any suggestions on good places to get reasonably priced imperial spanners? I'm just beginning the long-put-off mission of replacing the box in my Rangie and the workshop I'm using, whilst being very well equipped, is devoid of non-metric spannerage.

I've got a few ancient spanners, but they're a bit battered and have seen much better days, so is there anywhere - preferably a major chain - that is likely to still stock the usual imperial suspects?

Don't know about the UK, but here (Australia) AF sizes are available from any tool supplier (a few may need to be ordered in) but for Whitworth the best source is flea markets or similar places, although specialist tool suppliers can order in most.

Not an issue in the UK either from my experience. Prices very similar to metric size for size. If the retail places aren't helpful, the industrial supplies places will be delighted to relieve you of your hard-earned pennies. E.g.

Must say I reccomend Cromwell. I've bought thier "Kennedy" range of spanners for a while now, and they are much better quality than the rubbish sold by the likes of Silverline.

As long as countries like the US makes machines in imperial, there will be tools to work on them. Metric tools were available in Australia long before we officially changed from imperial, and ~35 years later imperial tools are still here.

I got for Xmas a halfords pro set of 150 bits, which included metric and imerial. It was on offer for £99, and with a life time guarantee, it aint half bad.

usual caveats about being sure of what you're buying, but he does have decent grade kit in amongst the cheap stuff.

You can still get Imperial sizes, including Whitworth, from Snap-on but you have to order them, don't know about Facom. I've never bought any Halfords tools but their Professional range seem pretty good, nice weight and well finished and folks I've seen using them have no complaints. Dunno if they do Imperials though but certainly A/F which used to be called S.A.E

Had to give that a clean recently, it takes ages :( I wonder how they coped in the dark ages, what with rain, blood and dirt!! At least it's only sweat and beer I had to clean off mine (oh and fingerprints ... you don't realise how hard they are to get out of plate armour when they've started to rust on!)

Fingerprints are a bastard on armour - BTDTGTTS. The wallpaper on the windows servers at work is a certain armoured Disco driver - it reminds my colleagues that I'm not the least sane person in the world. :-)
