Just about driveable

It is drivable just, 20 mph with a lot of care, I would guess the insurance company would go through everything else that needs doing and come up with and enormous bill so I am going to have fork out myself.

Apparantly somebody saw it happen. The driver was pissed of course, the drove into it, then went away, left his keys in the car, came back later, tried to start it, and then abandoned it, he is local it seems, so there may be some hope if the other car was insured, even so in this area that is not too likely.

so you have the number? at least you've a start, and if you have a witness, even better.

it's almost impossible to terminally break a landie by driving things into it :-)

My biggest worry if I allow an insurance inspector anywhere near, is that he would insist on new parts, and the chassis integrity being checked out on a jig not to mention insisting I get my bulkhead sorted.

Larry,

step 1 before engaging panic, is to find out whether the other driver was insured.

If he was, at least that means you have recompense!

And if he was, then you are entitled to have your property restored to the condition it was before the accident. You don't have to accept write-off value, you can insist that they repair it.

If he isn't, then you're down to your own comprehensive insurance. You can either pay for the job yourself, or cut a deal for cash+buy-back. If they insist on scrapping it, then you can tell them to get stuffed and do it yourself.

What are we talking about here BTW?

Be very very careful. IANAL but I wouldn't be surprised if your own insurance is invalid at the moment, on the basis that your Landy isn't roadworthy.
