If you're going to spam, you might like to get a website that actually works properly. Makes you look a bit stupid really.

Apart from the out of charter advert, what doesn't work about the weblink?

Site checks out perfectly to me.

Who by, is there a charter for this group? I think I've asked this question before and no one could point us to it. Remember this is the alt hierarchy... Greg

What charter would that be then? Greg

I assume that the group would have had a charter at creation time. Not always, in the case of the alt heirarchy I no, but still quite often done.

I as a recent subscriber to this groups assumed that there was still a charter knocking about somewhere, hence why it was suggested by another poster that the advert was forbidden here.

Not forbidden, but Netiquette deamands that pure adverts are not allowed in any group, unless it's specifically created for such a purpose.

Most groups will tolerate a blatant plug or two as long as there is some connection to a thread.

Fair enough, but at least it was on topic :) I have no connection with the garage at all BTW.

Now then, if you were to stick your url in your sig . . . . .

As far as I can find there isn't, I've asked before when people have made statements about things being banned by the charter and no one has ever been able to point to one so it's a fair bet that there isn't. Such statements are therefore nothing more than net nannies trying to sound official 8-).

Even if there was a charter, the assumption that it would ban all advertising is odd since most permit limited advertising on topic, which this surely is. Greg

As we are happy to do for you Richard 8-), by the way did you get anywhere with that tow bar for my 109?. Greg

There is a charter, sort of. There's a couple of sites that explain "netiquette", which is a sort of "over all" charter for for Usenet. While there's no sanctions that can be enforced, it does give the opportunity to see what constitues "normal/acceptable" practice.

It's RFC 1855, available at sites such as:

"How do I get the Charters for newsgroups? For newsgroups created in the "Big 8" hierarchies (comp, humanities, misc, news, rec, sci, soc and talk) since about 1989, you can find the their charters at ftp://ftp.isc.org/pub/usenet/news.announce.newgroups/. This archive actually contains all formal proposals (RFD postings) and vote results, so it also contains proposed Charters for groups that failed to pass their vote for creation. For newsgroups that did pass, the CFV (Call For Votes) and the final RESULT posting contain the "official" Charter as passed. When your retrieve one of the files, look to the bottom of the page for the most recent portion of the documentation. The RESULT posting is usually the last one at the end of each page.

For alt.* groups, there is no "official" source for Charters. However, at ftp://ftp.isc.org/pub/usenet/control/ you will find a large archive of "newgroup control messages", including those for alt.* groups. Those "control messages" often contain Charters, when one exists."

To save anyone the hassle of checking:- "From *uhclem*@usit.net Wed Sep 10 13:31:23 1997 Path: news.isc.org!uunet!in1.uu.net!4.1.16.34!cpk-news-hub1.bbnplanet.com!news.bbnplanet.com!news-peer.sprintlink.net!news-sea-19.sprintlink.net!news-in-west.sprintlink.net!news.sprintlink.net!Sprint!199.1.48.12!newsfeed.usit.net!news.usit.net!not-for-mail From: *uhclem*@usit.net (Dr.Memory) Newsgroups: alt.config,alt.fan.landrover Subject: cmsg newgroup alt.fan.landrover Control: newgroup alt.fan.landrover Date: Tue, 09 Sep 1997 20:07:33 GMT Organization: The Department of Redundancy Dept. For your newgroups file: alt.fan.landrover "

So nothing there.

How do I find out who initiated the group and/or if it is moderated?

For "Big 8" groups, the Request for Discussion (RFD) will tell you who proposed the newsgroup and the CFV and RESULT postings will include the Charter, which will tell if it is moderated. For alt groups, the control message will usually tell you this

See above for "Control Message"

Which says that advertising that's completely off topic or posted to multiple groups is wrong, but says nothing about a single, on topic advert such as this one, or repeated advertising in a sig... 8-) Greg
