Thanks to all for your help, and to Donald / Dougal for your e-mail. I am over the 'man flu' now and have gone through all suggestions. I could not find any points of electrical contact to test with my meter, the various button pushes, and key turns have not helped either. I have checked the button under the bonnet and that is alright. I have put new batteries again into both fobs and the only difference is that they now work straight away and from greater distance. (So it does seem that at least one of the new batteries might have been at the end of it's run any way). As I have said the central locking is actually locking it is just the indicators are not flashing to show this, even though the internal red led flashes to show the alarm is on. This Monday I will pop around to my lcal Land Ranger Services and ask if they can suggest anything. Once again thanks to all for your help.

I should also say that these are the original fobs which were issued with the Disco back in 94 and are the one button type.
In some vehicles (certainly on some BMWs) you can choose what you want the locking system to do when it locks/unlocks. Just flash the lights or toot the alarm/horn or both etc...could that be the problem? It's a Dealer job to change it on the vehicle computer.
Thanks Bob, I think I distantly remember something about turning the key or something. There is a section on the newer fobs with two buttons about entering a code using the key. I will let you all know what info I get tomorrow from the garage.
OK Land Ranger said what we have all more or less suggested and that is the fact that a door or a switch is not closing. He sugested a quick spray of WD40 and a test. This done anyway so no different. What I have just noticed coming in tonight is that one of the toggle's does not seem to fully retract down into the door. I will have a closer look tomorrow / Friday.
It wouldn't be that little round spring that's broken is it?
