LR90 Fueling issues.

For some time now I thought our Landy smelled strongly of petrol while running (particularly during the warm up phase), while its consumption might have increased. It also became less willing to stay running when started; it would rev less cleanly from idle and often cut out after a short while (before the engine got warm yet), unless the choke was pulled. It behaved the same today, until at some point it cut out while at the same time a small puddle of petrol formed on the ground. Upon inspection, the petrol came from a couple of tubes connected to the carbs; I'm not sure it was coming out of both. I've never noticed that happen before so I'd like to know what might have caused it. I did use the choke for a minute or so but pushed it back down and just kept it on idle. Temperatures in sunny Crete are around 14 degrees today, so nothing harsh. Everything seems to work fine when the engine's hot, but it still smells strongly of petrol after driving.

There's obviously something wrong (I can't be imagining so many things), so I'm going to have to get it checked, but I'd like to know what might be the problem. The carbs are supposed to have been adjusted on the last service, around 4K miles ago so I'm a bit surprised.

Any input appreciated.

I would guess that as you say carbs, we are talking V8 here. Which carbs are they, as the strombergs and SU's have significant differences.

There are leak off tubes fitted to both types of carb, so I would expect some petrol to come out of those, but they should be connected so they don't leak.

I had this problem with my 101 when I first got it, and changing every fuel filter cured the problem.

If these are the tubes that run down the wing and vent then it's the float chamber over flowing. Classic is a punctured float bowl but I've never known it with a modern float. What I have had happen is when running on LPG the float is empty, the float bangs up and down over bumps but also there is no upward force on the valve and when dry it starts unscrewing, thus leaking fuel into the float chamber.

Thank you both for your input,

I did indeed forget to mention that it's a V8 I was talking about. I'm embarassed to say that I don't know whether it has Strombergs or SUs and got lazy while trying to figure out the optical differences in the manual. I

*think* they're SUs (if it helps it's an official 1988-9 Greek import, haven't checked the numbers either).

Either way, according to your answer it must be the float chamber overflowing. I don't use LPG and the vehicle rarely encounters rough terrain mind. As I said I'll have it checked, but it might have to wait a bit, as our local friendly dealership isn't that friendly when it comes to charging for spares (over 400 Euros for a windscreen ffs, without the rubber seal) or labour.
