Land Rover 2 1/4 problem

I have a lightweight series 2A. Its always had a 2 1/4 engine and it does the job. However it overheated badly and when i checked the stat it had bits missing. The stat had been fine when i fitted it. I've had the head off and power washered all the water ways. The water pump has been off. I can find no bits of brass. However the thing still overheats. are there any obvious places the stat bits could be hiding but only impeding flow when shes hot?

In the radaiator (cheap), or in the block (not cheap)! Try back-flushing, forcing water "the worng way round", with a hose.

Done all that. New rad, new hoses. Suppose the block has to come out now.

Was it the right 'stat? The wrong 'stat will not block the bypass so the flow through the radiator is drastically reduced.

Whip the water pump off and check nothing behind it is blocked by bits of thermostat.

I'd reinforce that last bit - No 'stat is as bad as the wrong one - the 2.25 engine has a very unusual thermostat, wrong one or none WILL make it overheat. Right one? Then make sure the engine block & radiator isn't furred up. Whip out the core plugs & check the state of the block (replace with brass core plugs). See if a thin welding rod will go down the radiator core at the radiator cap - if not, get the radiator core professionally cleaned.
