Land Rover: Poor Quality & Worse Than Daewoo?

JD Power's determined LR is just about the very worse vehicle (least durable) one could purchase. Isn't this supposed to be the exact opposite? Considering the $$$$...you wanna know your SUV is better than more than just a Kia Sportage for crissakes! Lovely...

...."But Volkswagen and its Audi division continued to have quality problems: Volkswagen was among the five worst brands in the industry, among 37 ranked. Ford's Volvo and Land Rover divisions also performed below average, with Land Rover ranking behind the beleaguered Daewoo brand and better only than Kia, made by the Korean automaker Hyundai. According to the study, Kia made the two least durable vehicles: the Sportage sport utility and the Sephia sedan, which has been discontinued..."

LOL, Daywoo have been in the motor market for 2 years or so, Landrover since the 1950s. What kind of disrespect would have them put them in the same sentence :)

Now... who is the better band out of Pink Floyd and Coldplay?

Are you sure they said durablility and not build quality? LR are famous for poor tolerances, but how many Kia sportages will you see driving across the dessert on 30 years time with no oil in the gearbox???

Don't like either of them.

They definitely characterize LR as pretty much the least durable auto maker (other than Kia). In other words...you have more problems with LR than w/any other auto maker and they make it a point to state LR's are more problem plagued than even Daewoo vehicles. Ouch!....

Coldplay and Daewoo have been building cars since 1972 and using the Daewoo name since 1983. They've been sold in the UK since 1994. Mind you I still prefer my Series III to any Daewoo

Bugger! I have to fiddle with mine for another two years before it runs nice? Shame the chassis will fall off it before then :-(

Naaah - old LR products run because sad buggers like us are willing to get the spanners out, folks with new vehicles are (unsurprisingly) not willing to do so and expect the same 'I buy it from the dealer and it runs for three years without me checking sod all' as their last new car. Unfortunately LR have not yet caught onto that one.

Landrover's construction methods that make them more attractive than other manufacturers' are also the ones that lead to a lot of manufacturing faults. To give some examples:- The body being bolted together rather than welded means it is easy to modify (for example from soft top to truck cab to hard top) or repair in the field, but also more likely to show poor panel fit, leaks and rattles. The alloy bodywork lowers centre of gravity, and makes surface scratches immaterial - but is harder to repair and conceals rust in underlying steel components. Landrover uses detachable swivel housings so they can be replaced and so the front and rear hub components are the same, where Toyota for example has them integral with the axle housing so a scored swivel housing means a new axle housing. The simple fact is that Landrovers are much more repairable than their competitors. Whether you weigh this above the drawbacks of having this type of construction is up to the buyer, but is certainly not even considered in the type of survey reported, quite apart from the dubious methodology of the survey. Also not considered is the suitability of vehicles for particular purposes. At the same time, Landrover as a company has a lot of problems. Probably the worst is customer service, in my experience, but a close second is poor durability of the plastic used extensively since the series 2, a lot of which disintegrates when exposed to sunlight for a few years. Mind you, almost any manufacturer has their own problems. JD

Only 4.2? Why didn't you fit a 6.75 from a Roller?

Hi!

I think bits start go wrong or drop off Land Rovers early in their lives , but other cars catch up and overtake over time, so after 15 years a Land Rover seems like a durable option, when most other vehicles are headed for the scrapyard.

I've had horrible experiences with Volkswagens in the past few years. Electronics that failed, locks that failed, it burns through lightbulbs faster then you can imagine, arrogant sales and technicians and overpriced. For me no more VWs.

The £50 spending money Mrs D gave me wouldn't strech to the Roller but did buy the 4.2 Engine, 3 Speed box , radiator, oil cooler and all the bits that make an engine go brum.

However...I may be looking to put something a little more substantial in the

101 so if you see one in the small adds for anything under £100 then bear me in mind.

I jest not. Bargains are there to be had....you've just got to bide your time.... I've got £2.50 towards the paint job..
