I would suggest you follow your wife's instict and visit the southern Ionian islands first.

Try doing so before or after the summer holidays season though (that is from late May up to mid June/early July and then from mid September until very early October) This is when you will get the best value out of your money and the best service from the people working in the tourist industry. The earlier period is even better because everybody is relaxed and fresh.

If you are interested there may be a job vacancy at a friends' "safari" tour operator in the island of Rhodes. They are seriously considering employing someone from the UK able to properly service and drive their their Land Rovers (a couple of Discovery Mpi, a D110 TD5 2005 model year and most probably another one to follow soon) taking tourists (usually people from the UK) around the island.
