more gear box questions...

Dec 09, 2005 4 Replies

Hi all Just in the throws of cobbling together a spare s3 box out of various scrap ones I seem to have accumulated over the years (like you do). The question I have for the font of all land rover knowledge is are the layshafts interchageable from the various suffix boxes ?

Thanks in advance

Icky If you ave a problem stuff a worm in it! ( Berk, trap door)

Yes and no. At least one will fit another suffix box, but will make a horrible din. In theory, the suffix letter should be stamped on the shaft.

If you search for "layshaft" (no quotes) on the site below you should be able to find the various options.

No. Suffix A, B and C boxes have different layshafts.

Reverse gear & shaft was modified, suffix B boxes onwards

1st gear was modified for suffix C boxes and again for suffix D

2nd gear is different C to D

3rd is different C to D 3rd/4th Synchro cluster is different between C and D

Good luck!

Alex

It certainly sounds like it. Assuming the box was ok I'd stick with what's in there rather than what should be - at the very least it'll avoid confusion. The different lay shafts etc are noticably different when viewed side by side, so sorting through your "collection" should be ok.
