Just found this response to NERC becoming law...........

Time to break out the horse and cart and show them what real damage is. maybe run over a few ramblers on the way just for good luck.

What gets me is that the RA thinks pedal cycles are less damaging! In my days as a serious walker, it was the bloody mountain bikers who messed up most rights of way!

If they outlaw vehicles on byways as well, how is breaking the law going to make it worse?

They're not outlawing vehicles on byways, but people ignoring the law and capering about on land they don't have access to, or people abusing land they do have access to, is a surefire way to get us there ASAP.

If you've got the horse then can't you be a bit more inventive than just pulling a cart? How about a cart which is in fact a Series Land Rover with the engine and transmission removed? Or if you're feeling particularly beligerent then a cart which very closely resembles a plough ;-)

Looks like it time to hit the council offices next week to find the definitive map and see exactly where i can/cannot drive. Although last time i asked for said map, i was greeted with the reply "Whats that?, try looking in that big pile of maps over there".

I wonder what happens when a farmer drives to his fields now? Surely they would be breaking the law?

Having done many miles on the same byways doing "horses arses" (carrage driving) as I (used to?) drive I can say that horses with carts don't do all that much damage, no more than an LR with sensible tyres and an appropriately use right foot. The real problem is going to be cyclists going down hills with the back wheel locked, assuming that they can get through of course, now that there's no one to keep the undergrowth back....

I have to say that, having been out with a couple of groups who were of the V8, heavy right foot and Grizzly Claw tyres persuasion, I'm not over surprised the ban has come in - I've seen a 100 year old surface in Derbyshire on a lane that we used regularly removed by one idiot in a Range Rover in 5 mins, simply because he could not drive properly.

Because there's still quite a few unsurfaced roads, as in roads not BOATS, that are open to us.

Tyre choice is an odd one though, I used to use relatively mild ATs (TracEdges) on the defender with the idea that I wouldn't damage the ground as much, but I found that it was me who was ripping the ground up, not the grizzly claw types as I was the one spinning wheels. The off-roaders I know aren't the heavy-right-foot brigade though, so my current thinking is that agressive tyres stop the wheels spinning, as long as you don't drive like a nut, and it's when the wheels spin that the most damage gets done.

Having said that, I'm probably going to stop short of getting Anacondas for my new truck, and probably just stick with Technic Trackers as on my Defender. They're muds but not as agressive as the Anacondas.
