OT - lack of power in an OHC engine?

Hi all

this is a non-Land Rover related engine query but I am sure that somebody on here has the know how to give me a few pointers

I have, for my sins, a 1993 2 litre petrol engined Renault Safrane. It's a slow car at the best of times but, at the moment, there is no bottom end power until the revs get over 2,500 when it kicks in nicely. Any clues as to the suspects? My current list includes:

fuel feed/blocked filter blocked air filter timing some sort of loose electrical gizmo ECU fault

I'd welcome any additions to the above just so that I can get all oily this weekend.

Thank you

Graeme

If it's working at higher revs then you can probably discount your first two suggestions. Timing is also highly unlikely as the components that generate the timing are all fixed. ECU fault is a possibility. More likely is that one of the sensors on the engine is faulty. Normal candidates are the water temperature sender (beware it may have 2, one for the dashboard gauge and one for the ECU) or the Exhaust gas oxygen sensor (aka Lambda sensor). Has the engine got Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)? If so the valve may be stuck either open or shut. And my final suggestion is have you checked/changed the ignition leads? In most cases the leads actually show faults at lower revs rather than high revs, for a 1993 car I would tend towards this as a highly probable cause. In two out of three recent cases with friends/colleagues this has been the cause of low rev poor running, the other was a combination of a temp sender and an duff EGR valve.
