I had to melt the stub out of the tank. ( it had been full of water so it did not blow up, but it is rusty )

To clean the thread I ran an M10 1.25 tap down the thread and it seemed to be the right size. The tap with all its thread would be about 11/2 inches high. The outlet to the left makes it about the same wide. A flat lever on the front has a half turn from on to off. There would have been a plastic filter in the top of the tap if I had not melted it ))

Ah, I haven't got anything like that. I was thinking more along the lines of those at the link Steve Taylor posted. Although I don't share his confidence about the imperial thread.

Do you know what make the generator is? If for instance it's Honda, it's quite likely to be a shared part with one of their bikes. It certainly looks M/cycle-ish to me.

M10 is much smaller than 3/8 BSP.

M10 will even fall through a 1/4 BSP hole.

M10 x 1.5 and 1/8 BSP diameters are getting close but the pitch is a mile out.

Only the OP can tell us how close the M10 x 1.5 pitch is to his original hole but I'd guess that he's not far out. If it's far eastern in origin a metric thread is the most likely.

I would say its a cheap Chinese import from BQ.

I will probably have to find a fitting to go into the tank and then fit an inline tap and filter. Probably cheaper to buy another generator!

You're right, sorry. Read the wrong line in my thread tables.

I've had all sorts of Chinese and Korean gear, which STILL uses BSP.

I don't see your exact match but an M10 x 1 (like brake pipe thread) seems to be a standard.

Looks like a fairly standard Japanese bike/mower tap (Suzuki or Honda ISTR). Lawnmower shop would be a good start (as others have said). Does it have to be right-angle out or can it be straight through?
