OT TomTom GO 910

Ah right, sorry. As others have said, traffic needs to be updated regularly, I've not noticed GPRS charges being significant, although I'm always wary of such things as it's possible that it could go into a loop and cane your GPRS connection, running up a large bill which you'd then be obliged to pay. I bought the TMC radio traffic receiver for this reason, sadly it was useless and got sent back for a refund.

To be honest you are the first person I've heard of who has purchased Traffic unaware of the requirement for a data connection via a mobile phone.

It's unfortunate but Traffic is a TMC service and in common with every other TMC service is delivered live. If you have an x10 GO (510,710,910) then there is an alternative method of reception using their TMC/FM receiver, aside from the initial cost there is no further outlay but unfortunately the reception is poor and so I'd caution against purchase!

To be fair, when you go to their web site

and look specifically at traffic there is a tiny foot note that you have to have a service AND that you may be charged for it, though no mention that a PAYG phone won't work even though it has internet access. However, when you use their HOME software as they tell you to, and order the combined package at a discount price as they encourage you to, they say nothing until you've paid!.

Now I'm left with nothing to show for my money unless I change contracts, and then as has been pointed out what is to stop a fault running up a wopping bill?, that's precisely why I have PAYG!. Greg

The PAYG issue is dependent on provider, some allow GPRS Internet on PAYG, some don't to avoid customers consuming their credit time. However I'll raise your issue with TomTom as clearly they need to make this clearer.

The roadworks might not but the size of the queues are is variable from none to 10 miles+ and it doesn't take long for a ten mile tailback to form on a busy motorway.

Depends how far ahead you (or it) can look. I have a Traffic Master YQ so can see the whole country. And thus can make decisions early enough, like to use the A1 south from Leeds area when the M1 is static at Nottingham etc... Or wait until the M25 starts flowing again after the crawl hours.

That's the thing I like about TomTom - their out-of-the-box user- friendliness. I think there's a lot to be said for that - especially if you're looking for a GPS that's easy to use. My friend borrowed the 910 and didn't want to give it back...He said the maps were really reliable, and the bells and whistles were what he was looking for. I'd heard good things about the plus services, too, things like their traffic detector, etc. sound like they'd be really helpful.
