OTish: Newsgroup - how do you read yours?

As per topic really, how are folk reading the group?

I get it via Windows Mail (Vista 64 bit - yeah I know!).

Could do with finding a simple way to get it on my nokia 5800 for entertainment when away.

With PMINews for OS/2 connecting to my local Leafnode newserver that pulls the news form news.individual.net.

Well ideally you'd find a news client for that phone and connect direct to a news server. I wonder if there are any decent news clients available for these "smart phones"? Usenet isn't considered very "trendy" as there is very little in the way of bandwidth wasting eye candy only concentrated information (and wibble). You could always access the group via the web and google groups.

news.individual.net via Thunderbird 2.0.0.24 on an EEEPC 701SD running XP, connecting via an iPaq hw6515 PDA/phone used as a bluetooth modem. Just don't ask how I managed to get it all working together. ;-)

At home's easier, it's the same 'pooter, but on BT broadband via wifi or ethernet.

Currently using Xananews on an old IBM Thinkpad, wirelessly connected to some unsecured network in Derbyshire hills between Bakewell and Buxton .. ;)

At home, same but on home ethernet or wireless, or via something in Ubuntu, which I've just installed and can't remember the name of!

I is currently playing with techie stuff and different current OS's running on old computers!!

I'm really boring. I just use the Outlook express that came with the box from Lidl. The box is hard wired to the router that Madasafish gave me for free when I signed up.

Boss has one of those, she wanted a touch screen phone, that's all, I got handed the 116 page instruction book to read and set it up. Can't remember anything about Ngs although it does do e-mails and browsing so presumably you could use Google to read the Ngs.

Off-line news reader Forte Agent version 1.93(yes, it's ancient, but it does all I need!) through BT's news server, on dial-up. Currently using XP on a laptop. I have used(and still can) a Psion series 5mx running RMRNews using a mobile(with IR) as a dial-up modem(bit slow but using inclusive air time). Now my old faithful IBM Thinkpad(Win

2000) is fixed, I'll prolly use that with the mobile.

Windows (7 on a Thinkpad, XP on another Thinkpad or 2008R2 terminal services session onto 'my' server at work) and Thunderbird, connected via whatever is handy at the time (DSL, Vodafone dongle, a random unsecured wireless network or work).

I use SLRN, but not very practical for use on a phone as you have to run a terminal under linux to use it!

On my mobile phone (Nexus One) there's a free newsreader called GroundHog although I don't really use it as usenet news doesn't really suit itself to multiple readers (no read/unread or subscription sync). It does work well though, so if your phone screen is large enough it's perfectly do-able.

MicroPlanet Gravity, on either of two pc's. This one XP, the other W2k.

N5800? Got one for work. Looks nice, but a pain to use. Every time I answer a call with it, it drops the line. About half of them we have here suffer that. Orange say it's not a phone problem, yeah right.

Also, the battery life is rubbish when it sees a 3G network.

It also often has a "disagreement" with the built in bluetooth in the works car. When that happens, if I want to use it (read when I *Need* to!) I then have to power cycle both the phone and car! (A Mazda 6, other BT phones are OK with it.)

It does the Y'Tube etc video player via wifi OK though, and all the other multimedia stuff, & the camera is good for closeup work. It's just crap as a phone!.

It's already been back to Nokia for a new power/charge socket too, and it's not even a year old yet!

Not impressed, but there again I don't pay for it! :)

Ooo, Mine has been ok to date. In fact got one for the Mrs yesterday too. I have tweaked it so it doesn't connect to 3g unless I allow it, also shut the sat nav off unless I tell it to and the battery lasts for days now.. like a normal non smart phone. Mine is on Vodofone , I've had it for around 8 months. I've heard others have an issue with the charger socket.

I wondered if the calls dropped because the touch screen hung up with the cheek pressing it but the touch screen closes down or should do when the head is against it. No problems with the Nokia bluetooth that came in the Rangie.

I like gadgets so regardless what ever phone I get is always going to be a compromise as I cant have everything on one phone. For me the 5800 seemed the best compromise.. much better than the Google G1 that disappointed greatly, won't even run Google Latitude and required a hack to be remotely useful to tap in to the features available.. shuch as using is as a wifi access point for laptop. Bluetooth on it is s**te and won't allow connection to a computer.

Of note OVI maps are now free for drive and walk navigation on the nokia. I updated my phone (free) the other night and it also has speed cameras on to. Of course that will cane the battery so an in car charger would be necessary.. thought it worth a mention.

Only real downside of the 5800 i have noticed is that on the two sunny days of the year the screen can be difficult to see in bright sunlight. I've maxed the brightness since so will see.

We were looking at N97 and N900 but their reviews leave much to be desired and the dealer we went to refused to sell us one due to the number of recalls and issues that were ongoing.

Forte Agent 6, lets me do things the way I want to do them. And good for secret stuff like posting on The Monastery where you need some IT nous to be able to post at all :)

If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning.' Catherine Aird
