Performan Chip and Insurance

Hi All

Does anyone know if and how much is normally charged when you tell your insurance company about having a Defender 90 chipped?

I had the Twisted Performance Chip fitted at Billing and am waiting for my insurer (NFU) to get back to me with the cost.

I dont know how the fuel consumption is working out yet but this has made a noticeable difference to my 90's performance :-). It accelerates loads smoother.

Thanks Phil

Funny Funny!!!!!!!!!! You should have driven slow as possible or fast as necessary or what ever the saying is!! Failing that you should look out for trees that jump out at you :P

Hi

It was the Hurricane Chip from

It is a separate box which has been directly wired to the ECU plug, although they do have one which plugs into the ECU (costs a few more £££). I have an older TD5 so dont think I can have the ECU Software Updated.

I can also just unplug it and the Engine goes back to normal apparently.

I paid £295 at Billing which I think was the show price.

Most of my driving is on the road (up and down the A34 to work and back) and the extra BHP and Torque it provides really makes a difference, accelerating seems alot smoother. I have only had it in since Saturday and I would not be without it now (unless my insurance goes up to much).

Thanks Phil

Reminds me of Gaydon, when a company spent 45 minutes trying to sell me an engine chip for my 200 tdi Disco. Despite telling him several times that it was a 200tdi, he still insisted he could fit an engine management chip to improve the performance..... The large group of people around me were all chuckling, and he was then upset when I showed him my vehicle and he could not find a chip to replace and complained that I had wasted his time.

The conversation started when I asked him about intercoolers, and he reckoned a chip would be better than an bigger intercooler.......

Thanks for your reply.

I was asking as i do the ECU upgrade chips ( propper chip change ) for the older models, And the serial flashing on the later models.

£295 does seem a good price to be honest :) i no the type you mean i think it has some yellow wires that solder to the injector pulse wires on the ecu plug.

Just a bit of advise IF the wires are just scotch locked to the origanal wiring loom i would advise that you have them solderd in proplery as the scotck locks tend to cut half way threw the wire and can cause faults at a later date.

Hopefully thay have solderd it in proplery tho :) well at least they should have .

regards bell and thanks again

I thought it sounded like you were asking for a reasons. They are scotch loc'd however they did it so if it goes wrong then I will be banging on there door. At the price they were knocking them out at I would not expect a solderd in job.

As you are 'in the business' have you had any experience of how much the insurance normally goes up by?

Which is the product that you sell? I had done a little bit of research before hand and most of the chip seem to offer the same benefits. Thing I did like was they fact that

1) They had more than one Landy at the show that had had the upgrade.

2) The website had a landy on the front page and not a so called 'muscle car'

3) They do not go on about the extra speed you can get out of the car by more focus on BHP and Torque.

Thanks Phil

Ive never actually had any work done by Twisted (even though they are just up the road from me), though I have heard and read many glowing reports about them. I have however spoken to Charles (main man at Twisted) a few times and he has always come accros as knowledgable and obliging.

He has a good reputation to keep so I doubt you'll have any problems.

...and know I dont work for him etc etc, just credit where it appears due!

Regarding insurance i carnt comment i have only ever herd of 2 options one is to not tell them ( not a good idea tho ) . And the second is to get insured for any vehicle regardless of make and model then they dont need to no what extras you have had fitted .
