I read on welding group that the way to tackle this one is to place a nut over the top of the bolt and stick weld through the nut onto the bolt, i.e. weld the two together "from the inside".

Apparently there is a special welding rod for this job. Your friendly specialist welding supplier may know. Then simply get your spanner and unscrew. The heat of the welding helps loosen the bolt. Or so they say. Note: I've never tried it!

I have tried it with a MIG set, and it *didn't* work. I kept shearing the weld when I tried to turn it. My welding is pretty rough though, and stick-welding may work better.

Seen it done on locking wheelnuts on my car. worked eventually. Depends on where the thing's sheared though. you can also drill through the *middle* of the offending bolt, with a suitable-sized drill, and then run a tap up the hole to clean/recut the thread.

the next thing is to drill it out bigger and re-tap it bigger, or cut out the offending captive nut and replace it, or replace the rear cross-member...

Warm the area with a blowlamp to crack the seal? Put a plaster on your hand Regards

Have placed plaster on hand - am feeling better now - thank you.

Have spoken to my friendly bodgit and scarper mechanic who informs me this type of bolt is an expanding cap one (ie like a wall plug) and so is v unlikely to unscrew. Therefore:

I have decided to give the drill out option a go.....or I might just give up belt the little darling through the x-member and weld the bracket on instead!
