You are confusing selectable and full time 4WD. A Series motor hasselectable 4WD and a 90 or 110 has full time with a centre diff-lock. Thereis no centre diff-lock with selectable 4WD so when in 4WD as Bob Cookeindicates, the engines torque is split between front and rear axle. Evenwith the whole front or rear axle off the ground, the other axle willreceive torque. Bob is clearly refering to a series motor and is correct.You're a little confused again - bear in mind that only later models havecentre diff-locks and the amount of torque applied to a wheel on an axlewith a diff-lock is a function of each individual wheels ability to applythat torque, ie the amount of grip. The locked diff will attempt to applyequal torque to both wheels, but only the one with traction will be able toapply it. Although Bob's description is a little simplified, it is notentirely wrong.Clearly. ;-)

Good. I am confident as I always have been in the purpose of differentials. I just wanted to put it simply and grab the middle of the stick!

well, ideally you'd have one on the rear, centre and front. but, as you say, money is the factor here. about aus$3-4000 a pop aren't they (2000 pounds)??

Not sure why the XR4x4 has a free diff on the front - it may be that there's a good reason, or it may be that it's just cheaper.

rear + centre works pretty well though. Already got the centre one, courtesy of ex-range-rover BW-type transfer box.
