Red Mist...

"Alfie" our VM Rangie made a protest tonight, I think it's because I've used the Disco for towing recently and the 101 for the last two trips to work.

Anyway the battery light is staying illuminated. Bear in mind its a VM Diesel and not a petrol... heres the symptoms;

At rest batteries show 12 volts.

Engine started and Charge light remains on bright still 12 volts

Rev engine and light remains on but dim then leave to idle and light remains on and dim , no noticable change in dim/brightness since revved up, check voltage at idle... 13.5 volts.

Repeat above with headlights on and voltage at idle 12 volts.

I've sprayed copious ammounts of WD40 and tetensioned the belt prior to all this.

Symptons have manifested whilst parked up for 3 or 4 days with the odd shunt across the drive to bring the 101 out.

What do you think?

Oh...the rev counter seems fine.

I'm braced for a kick in the wallet.

Either faulty regulator in the alternator or faulty ignition switch. The failure to start putting out power without revving suggests the former, the light staying on dim, though is the classic symptom of high resistance in the ignition switch (or elsewhere in the circuit, but the switch is most likely). Hello JD. My landrover 90 Diesel is doing the same. Though it turn out to be my ignition switch which hopefully will be replaced. I noticed when my key wouldn't return to it normal position I gained a battery light,. So I manually turn the key back.

My wallet was braced, however it's now gone into denial.

£160 +Vat was my first quote , they had one in stock but on inspection was not the same unit. Popped over the road to Landrover. STC3097 or STC3095... i forget... £576 + VAT...........

"Mr Davies..... Mr Davies.!!!... can someone call an ambulance......"

I forgot to ask if there was any surcharge for exchange units. Any one want to buy a Range Rover, needs an Alternator... given its the sum of it's parts offers around 2 Million.

Right now I've come back around.... how do I test the regulator and where can I buy a new one / ones from?

Any good sites that detail the operation would be appreciated

At the risk of demonstrating the first signs of madness....

I've now got the Alternator off. I've given up opn the local Auto electrician ringing back... was hoping for a diagnosis before removal but I need the car for a trip later in the week.

Anyway It's a Lucas item and has the following numbers

24292A A133-80 289012V

Now I'd guess the final set identify it as 12volt and the 80 I would guess means it's an 80 amp unit. any clues to the rest?

One of my concerns s if I do swap it with another that look the same of similar ampage what the effect on the rev counter could be.

I seem to recall seeing the A133 bit before on other units whic instils a tiny amount of confidence I may see change out of £700 after all (Inc VAT but not fitting - and yes I'm hoping for around £650 change :o) ).

have you got a lucas service place anywhere near? try taking the alternator in and seeing if they'll test it. they may have spares an' all. What type of alternator is it?

sum places can either recon it or send it off. we had/ have a local (Halifax)dude that did/does them at a workshop at his house

80A model A133. in other words, a big fat one. There was an A115 as well, and sundry others.

pick up a s/h one... they fit 'em to sundry of the bigger fords, as well - you'll prolly have to change the pulley. One thing about A133 is that it's got it's own size and type of shaft - A115, fro example, is smaller. I think you'll find a 100A one will fit instead, if you want.

I think there's a 127 as well.

Have a look in the breaker's for a similar-sized lucas beast...

but there is also the LSUK option, as suggested already.

Well, that's the danger of going to the "other place" ;-)

2.5VM Alternator - A127/65Amp - 69.32 inc VAT regulator for above - 9.63 inc VAT

2.4VM Alternator - A133/65Amp (Lucas) - 90.00 inc VAT regulator for above - 5.76 inc VAT

Let face it, when the staff from ther place buy their parts from us, we must be quite competetive!

No surcharge here, if you exchange the unit then and there, or we decide to trust you to return the old one.....

Cheers Richard

hehe. I bet both fit either, an' all. unless you run into different shaft sizes.

Yup indeed at them prices I'd have been straight on the phone knowing what I know now. I've just got back from Burslem and dropped it off at Marks Auto Electrics, they are testing and if as they suspect its the rectifier fitting same for £35.00. I remain hopeful and get to keep the 80 amp unit which admittedly for my needs seems way OTT but it's nice to be prepared for any future projects :-)

I managed to get the alternator off last night and removed the pulley etc all without getting frozen to the driveway.

Hope to be able to get back on with Percy soon so I'm sure I've an ever growing parts list and even more options given the v8 installation.

Fingers crossed it's the rectifier!
