RR Classic locks

I have a 1988 Classic with a set of 4 identical locks. I also have a

1990 Classic with two different locks - the steering lock matches the tailgate and the door(s) are different. I say door(s) because I haven't checked that the door locks are a pair!

Anyway, is it feasible to swop the locks from one vehicle to the other? The only problem I can see is replacing the shear bolts for the steering locks - or maybe even simply extracting them.

Any thoughts?

The 1988 is being robbed of everything that the 1990 requires prior to it's disposal.

TIA

They undo easily enough with a dot-punch and smallish hammer. Once they're off use a slitting disc on the grinder to slot the heads and then reinstall them using a screwdriver (or buy some suitable capscrews for the job).

Agreed - it's not difficult. In my case I had to modify the standard capscrew heads slightly (reduced the OD, I think).

or if you want to be really posh, you can get replacement cunning bolts with shear-off heads.

Excellent!

Thank you chaps.

I was fearing - in my usual pessimisstic manner - that it would be a pig and that you would all say that I absolutely must remove the steering wheels - I don't, do I????

Oh, and swapping the door lock barrels is just a (fiddly) bit of cake after the steering column lock, yes?

Cheers

The column lock changes at DA274121 (2-door) & DA273923 (4-Door) and stays the same to past 1992, so that should be ok. You can often tap the shear bolts round with a small chisel, failing that a hacksaw blade between the two halves works ok, but doesn't do a lot for the cosmetics!

The door latches change between 1988 and 1990 (actually 1989 - FA351033ish depending on central locking and/or the number of doors) - look for the type of inside opener, if they are the same (they shouldn't be, but we are talking LR here!) then the latches will be the same.

Thanks Richard

Hmm, that's a shame. RTC5024 up to FA351847 and then RTC5025.

Bollards

The 1988 has VIN ....3EA343349 and the 1990 has VIN ....3GA422556).

Inside openers are different - as are the door panels. The 1988 has round, golf tee type buttons for operating the lock from inside, while the 1990 has the squarer buttons.

Is it wishful thinking that the barrels will be the same?

Is it feasible to buy (or obtain) a complete set of matched locks (front doors, steering and tailgate)?

Why isn't life simple?

On a slightly different note should the petrol tanks be identical? The

1990 one appears to be leaking slightly.

2-Door and 4-Door have different part numbers, so probably not.

It certainly is -

MWC1753 Lock Set - Front Doors/Complete Column Lock &Tailgate - 4-Door - Range Rover Classic to EA351032 £224.42 inc VAT MXC1386 Lock Set - Front Doors/Complete Column Lock &Tailgate - 4-Door - Range Rover Classic from FA351033 £198.57 inc VAT

MXC8926 Lock Set - Heated - Front Doors/Complete Column Lock &Tailgate - 4-Door - Range Rover Classic from FA351033 £pend - probably requires a mortgage though!

Indeee!

There's multivent (Efi) and single vent (carb). At some stage they got the plastic Discovery tank I think, but that book has just dropped down the back of the shelf and it can dammed well stay there!

That'll be the set for me then! Not as pricey as I expected. Having said that it might be more cost effective to have the passive imobiliser of unknown provenance replaced with something that does all the normal alarm stuff plus central locking.

I think I'll take both tanks off and stare at them in the hope that the petrol fumes makes my eyes water so much that I cannot tell them apart! Then fit the one off the 1988 to the 1990 if you see what I mean.

It seems that this 'better replacement that will be more reliable' (SWMBO) has most of the niggly faults that I fixed on the old RR in the

10 years of ownership - but slowly rather than all at once.
