Hello all:
My '91 Range Rover Classic started acting up about two weeks ago not wanting to shift out of first gear for the first 5 minutes. I checked the transmission fluid and it was at the minimum level. After adding about 3/4 of a quart, the car ran better. Yesterday morning before getting on the expressway the car seemed to hesitate a bit at low speeds, but once on the highway it ran fine until about 45 minutes into the drive when I sensed the car losing forward momentum and I had to drift into the emergency lane. After stopping and restarting a couple of times where the car moved forward for a minute or two, I lost all propulsion. I had the car towed to the dealer. This morning the dealer was able to drive it for a bit and then again it broke down. The dealer is recommending a new transmission ($7000). Could there be a less severe solution such as replacing a plugged transmission filter? I called AMCO Transmissions and they are quite eager to work on it and are quoting $1800 to rebuid it and possibly more depending on the outcome of an actual inspection. Can AMCO be trusted to perform a good job? I live in the Chicago area, does anyone know of a good transmission shop experienced with RR's?
