I sometimes bought a Range 3.9 and had to invest nearly 8k EUR to have it in a reasonable condition.

Since then I expect the unexpected ;)

Hi Mark, Didn't notice this site before, a lot of good info. Can you tell me if there is a real difference between the 200 and 300 TDI engine or is it just an upgrade. All the specs look the same to me. Kind regards, Erik-Jan.

I've only just uploaded that site a week or so ago, I need to set down and write a load of articles and such to beef it out a bit and then I'll launch it properly.

The 200TDI is brilliant - never had any problems with the engine whatsoever.

P.S. Worst thing ever - didn't happen to me but a motorist I helped, here goes.

Natwich near Crewe, U.K. 5:30 p.m. dark winters night, Volkswagen Golf driven by a gorgeous Brunette who was a solicitor, a woman.

I stopped and asked what was wrong:-

"The engine has just stopped and wont turn over" She replied.

I turned the key nothing. All the lights worked though. I checked the coolant - no problem, oil cap - no problem, checked the dipstick - NO OIL. I said there was no oil. She agreed , she said:-

"Yeah two weeks ago I banged the sump on a friends driveway and damaged the bolt in the sump and so managed to get it off and was going to show it to the garage at the next service in a weeks time and ask then to put a new one on."

I gulped and said, "Did no oil come out?"

"Oh yes, but I let it run onto the grass on my driveway."

I said "the engine was sezed and probably dead, how long had she run it", I aksed,

"For two weeks, every day", she replied. All credit to the Golf it survived for two weeks. I offered her a lift home and felt very sad for her.

Never did find out if she was any good at deliveries !!

Haven't seen those yet. So what I mean is are they alike or is it a completely new developped engine with the same specs. Is it hard to distinguish one from the other... Kind regards, Erik-Jan.

I put the Series 2 into a local specialist for a new rear crossmember. A day's work, no dramas....

Two weeks, two grand and a lot of searching for a bulkhead later I had a complete rebuild on galvanised chassis.

The immortal diagnosis was... "If it were an 'orse I'd shoot it"

The 300 tdi has a big black rubber thingy sitting atop the engine, however this can be removed and can be fitted to a 200tdi so it's not conclusive identity. I think some of the ancilleries are in different places, I don't have the details but soneone here will.

hi folks, as I understand it the 200tdi uses an assortment of different drive belts for power steering,alternator etc whereas the 300tdi has one belt for the lot....200tdi uses old style v belts and pulleys, 300tdi uses multi grooved pulleys and belt.... hope this is of use, cheers, Steve

The 300Tdi has a completely different timing case and manifolds. When it was launched journalists claimed a 10% power and torque increase (though LR never did, as far as I remember).

The timing case changes were to accomodate the serpantine belt system, then considered a Good Thing. The manifold changes were to reduce the puff of black smoke on start-up (partially successful), and more importantly, to get better top-end power. This was acheived, and LR won a Queens Award For Tecnological Acheivement for producing a diesel engine which maintained it's low speed torque while gaining top end power (probably where the 10% figure above came from).

Apart from those changes, the fundamental design was the same as the 2.25 diesel from 1958(ish) - which just goes to show hoe good that design was in its day.

The Td5 still uses some components present in the original engine!

So if you need to ID a 200/300Tdi engine look for the serpantine belt!

I once did a run to Oxford & back in a my Mk2 Golf Gti 16v & unknown to me the oil pressure switch was pissing oil all under the car. I checked oil at home to find none at all. I had driven 270 miles with no oil & it was fine! I'll bet that car never rusts underneath, it was plastered with oil !
