Smokey Landy help

I have fitted a brand new Zenith Carbm onto the old girl. However, she is smoking heavly... so i took her to Sanspeed in bexleyheath for a tune-up thinking the timing must be out. However, after returning they said the timing/ignition is fine and the carb is running super rich - which is causing the smoking. Said they have turned the carb setting to super lean and no change. they said the Carb is knackered and buy a new one or, the diaphram (the one with 3 screws on the top of the Carb) could be at fault. I looked at this and it is ok.

I don't want to throw good money after bad. What should i do?

Retun the Zenith whence it came. Source a replacement somewhere more reputable. Didn't know Zeniths had a diaphram thought that were Solex.

see if it helps at all I've not touched a Zenith for about - well a very long time a pin hole in the diaphragm causes many of the problems and an incorrectly set float or muck in the float valve is the usual suspect if its running ridiculously rich (see the bit about adapter plates.) worn butterfly spindles if its ridiculously lean Funny coincidence I found I still have the various needle and jet setting tools for the early model solex/zeniths the more I tidy up the more surprises I get Derek No I do not have tourettes I own a land rover :-)

Nope Solex and Zenith amalgamated in 1955 and then with Stromberg and just to make things more complicated Burlen Fuel Systems Limited

now make both and also SU's amac and amal carbs either way bloody confusing my archive shows a Solex type carb with dashpot as a Zenith 175cd and yes I do have the needle adjuster tool I wonder if Ade's garage have one? or have they played with the idle adjuster Derek

You have checked for the usual Zenith warp, I hope? Easily fixed with a bit of O ring.

Amalgamation with reorganisation and rationalisation, bring back the Skinner's Union, I say. Suspect you might be right, b'stard to adjust mixture on a Stromberg as I recall, often resulting in the diaphragm being wrought assunder in frustration. Much much easier with an SU, but a nice little carb once set up right.

No No its not leaking merely marking its territory. I changed the upper breather pipe a couple of weeks ago (200 Tdi Disco) it had a split hidden underneath where it fits (?) the output pipe on the rocker box probably due to the tight bend but like those on the rocker cover gasket it tends to migrate back down the block . Go with Richards suggestion bleed the clutch its a ten minute job ( including finding the tin of hydraulic fluid to top up) which costs next to nowt.

Thats why I kept the tools they have a dowel that engages in slot in the tube that holds the damping oil - that in theory prevents the piston twisting and mangling the diaphragm two types one like a long allen key the other a slot driver and if you are dead unlucky a third which adjusts the jet tube from below I think thats for a Stromberg but maybe not. You wouldn't be prepared to lend the one with the allen key to a poor V8 owner in France? I'd cover postage both ways...
