Opinions please: Zenith 316 or Weber 34ICH

I need a new carb for a SIIa 2.25 petrol. I've had webers, solex's and zeniths before, but TBH I can't find much difference between them. They all seem to give the same fuel consumption, no difference in performance, and all 3 have given me trouble on numerous occasions (mainly due to being old and worn out)

Up untill recently I've preferred the Weber over the Zenith, but having been through 2 2nd/H webers and a 2nd/H zenith, I'm debating wether returning to zenith this time. Bearing in mind I'm short of cash I don't want to buy one and wish I'd bought the other.

So, which is the best, the Zenith or the Weber?

You'll get all sorts of opinions on this - but they seem to all come down to "a good carburetter is better than a sick one", so the new one is better, regardless of brand. Some have suggested that the Weber gives slightly better mileage and the Zenith slightly better power, but others have disputed this. JD

I'd echo what JD said, either type works when it works, but if there's a problem then they're both crap. Logical really.

On my S3 we had a Zenith, swapped it for a Weber after a problem, which went away, but was replaced by a different problem. First was a low speed tendency to stall, which we put down to the carb simply beong old and gunky and worn, second problem was a high speed loss of power which again we reckoned was just a tired carb. In the end a new, as in brand-new not second hand, Zenith carb set up correctly fixed it. I expect a new Weber would also have fixed it, but we found a NOS Zenith at a mates for a beer 'or three' ;)
