What a Differance!!!!!

I have just replaced a rather warn Zenith carb with a brand spanking new Webber and the difference is amazing. Before the change I used to have to drop into 3rd to clime out of the village ( West Coker) where I live and would still only be topping 25/30ish.Now it climes out like a rocket , 40 in

4th and still accelerating. This wouldn't be so bad but for the fact that I live in a 30 mph zone and it compleatly cought me out and I had to back off a bit ( a lot ) to stay within the 40mph posted at the top of the hill. On the duelll cabbage way between Sherbourn and Yeovil it went off the clock and it still felt like it had more to go, fortunatly the better half pointed this out too me before it got silly.

So well done Rose ,my battered ,but mechanicly sound , Srs 11 SWB ex millitary , I thought it couldn't get any better but I WAS WRONG.......

Have to say, I'm having carb probs... I've asked advice on various forums, and the consensus I got was that a properly reconditioned Zenith or a new Zenith (hard to find genuine new) would give more power out than a Webber. Some even said that the Webber ended up in the bin after numberous problems, and I sorta made up my mind I'd have my Zenith reground/reconned at a cost of 80 quid from a carb specialist.

Yours is the first positive report that I've had of the Webber, I assume you mean the ones being sold for about 50 notes on paddock. I'm quite interested to know more, as a new carb for 50 notes compared with fixing one which is already 35 years old is an important decision for me!

Incidentally, I actually live just off the A30 (Sherborne - Yeovil road) just as you come into Yeovil, If you spot a pastel green Late 2A with a cream hard top around there, it's most probably my wagon!

Cheers, Dan

I have to say that what makes it a lot better than the old carb is that it was given to me by the previous owner who bought it new and never got round to fitting it. I amm going to book my 2A with the local garage for a tune up and, hopefully , they will fiddle about with it to get the best out of the beast.

AFAIK the biggest problem with the Weber is that is doesn't like steep gradients and can lose power on long climbs? But I'm only regurgitating what 'bloke down the pub' said.

Can't do better than a freebee... I think I'll stick to my plan of reconditing the old Zenith, I just hope its worth the dough! Actually if I can get over

55MPH out of my old SWB with 7.50s on I'll be a happy chump!

Just a note reference my last post. I have 7.50 on my SWB but I also have a LWB speedo so, theoreticly , the indicated road speed should be about right.

Or hot weather. I fitted one to my old lightweight when i was young and naive and regretted it. Prone to fuel vaporisation and the float bowl isnt as deep.

The main reason a Weber seems a miraculous cure is that it is usually replacing a completely sh*gged Zenith. The Weber has a smaller venturi and tends to run lean producing apparantly better mpg. A rebuilt Zenith is a better carb . You can do a good rebuild yourself following the guidance in various posts and magazines. The main thing to ensure is that the various faces of the carb are carefull matched, rubbing them down on wet'n'dry on a glass plate if needed.

This is a definite case for sticking with the original unless you are into upgrading with replacement manifold, SU carb etc.

Webber is more economical due to it flowing less air/fuel. (smaller choke size). It is also less powerful with one fitted for the same reason.

Never experienced that one.

Couldn't agree more.
