speedo in KM not MPH

I'd guess it's a Jap import. Check the radio too if it's fixed they have odd freqs in Japan compared to the UK.

I think you need to make sure there are miles on it. They can be stuck on the face though. Or swap the speedo head for a UK one.

Hi, I used a LHD renault in the UK for 5 years after moving back here from Switzerland. No MPH on the speedo, so I just stuck the importants ones (30, 50, 70) on with little stickers. Never had any problems at MOT etc, but never stopped by police, so cannot say if it was legal or not. Andrew

My 101 is KM, and there don't appear to be any problems here.

Jap Import Disco's make a good buy as they are usually higher spec and more importantly free of rust too. There is a place near me that specialises in them

Speedometers

1. (1) Save as provided in Paragraphs (2) and (3), every motor vehicle shall be fitted with a speedometer which, if the vehicle is first used on or after April 1, 1984, shall be capable of indicating speed in both miles per hour and kilometres per hour, either simultaneously or, by the operation of a switch, separately.

(2) Paragraph (1) does not apply to ? (a) a vehicle having a maximum speed not exceeding 25 mph; (b) a vehicle which it is at all times unlawful to drive at more than 25 mph; (c) an agricultural motor vehicle which is not driven at more than 20 mph; (d) a motorcycle first used before April 1, 1984 the engine of which has a cylinder capacity not exceeding 100 cc; (e) an invalid carriage first used before April 1, 1984; (f) a works truck first used before April 1, 1984; (g) a vehicle first used before October 1, 1937; or (h) a vehicle equipped with recording equipment marked with a marking designated as an approval mark by Regulation 5 of the Approval Marks Regulations and shown at Item 3 in Schedule 4 to those Regulations (whether or not the vehicle is required to be equipped with that equipment) and which, as regards the visual indications given by that equipment of the speed of the vehicle, complies with the requirements relating to the said indications and installations specified in the Community Recording Equipment Regulation.

(3) Instead of complying with Paragraph (1) a vehicle may comply with Community Directive 97/39 (a) or with ECE Regulation 39.

I don't have copies of the documents in (3) at hand.

What's the betting that the dual reading requirement was another diktat from Brussels.

Does anyone know how the 'first use' requirements are applied to imports?

Which begs the question, what happens if you take such a vehicle through a 20mph speed camera?

The absence of a speedo won't absolve you from the responsibility of keeping to a speed limit!

Frequently encountered on grey and parallel import bikes. Solved by little sheet of stickers given away with bike mags regularly or by fitment of gizmo in the speedo drive which alters the gearing such that the gauge reads in MPH despite being labelled KmH.

Another piece of ill thought out legislation rears it's ugly head?

I've also never had any problems with the 101 which is in KM. you work out where the important bits are!

Are there any 20 mph cameras? As I understood it, the police said they will not enforce 20 mph limits. TonyB

I registered a German Campervan in the UK last year and had no problems with only Kph. When tachographs first came in for trucks I think they were only available in Kph, part of the EEC directives about metric I suppose.
