spitting carby

it's happening on my mower, but i assume it's the same as when it happens on an old carb-fed car. my mower is ok at idle but as soon as i give it a bit of throttle it starts spitting shit back up the air intake. what is causing this and how can i fix it??

any help would be good thanks.

The reason it spits back is that the combustion process is still carrying on when the inlet opens to let in the new mixture, reasons for this could be, ignition timing miles too late, mixture well off, miles too lean possibly, or if the engines been apart , valve timing a tooth out. well, being a lawnmower (i don't think you can change ignition timing etc can you??) it must be the mixture. too lean is your bet is it?

no, the valves all seem to be closeing well. good pressure on intake and exhaust and good pressure inside combustion chamber. i think the mixture must be a little off. the mower sat under next-doors porch for seven years. i gave the carb a bit of a clean, put some petrol in and away it went. but it started getting really shit, then spitting back. maybe the fuel jets need a good clean or something. can't be that much wrong with a mower, there are only about 4 moving parts.
