My 1999 TD5 defender has just failed its MOT on emissions. I had put an additive in the fuel and disconnected the chip but it still failed. Does anyone have any other suggestions how to reduce the emissions, can you 'reset' the ecu? Could I remove the air filter? Clean the carbon off the EGR valve? Any help would be appreciated

hardly surprising. depending on what chip you mean. If you mean an aftermarket performance device, then yes, you might need to disconnect it.
put it on a testbook and get it reset. Theoretically, this is supposed to happen regularly in the service schedule... I suspect that various dodges like removing the air filter are just likely to confuse the ECU even further.
Of course, there's always the favourite "thrash the nuts off it for 5 minutes before testing it."
The other thing that happens is dependant on your tester: run it at less than full revs.
Best option is to fit very thick carpets !!
Ironically it failed the emissions test twice with the chip disconnected, in desperation I reconnected it and it passed without a problem!
